In 2005, Solicitor Adams began the process for funding and building a Drug Court team. After compiling a qualified staff, undergoing Department of Justice training and securing funding, the program was launched in January of 2008. Participants in this program are limited to defendants who have committed non-violent offenses due to drug addiction. The 18-month program includes strict supervision, monitoring, treatment and drug testing. Participants must maintain full employment through the duration of the program and failure to complete all of the program will result in having to finish their sentence in prison. By breaking the cycle of addiction, we can reduce drug use, reduce crime and make our community safer.
Drug Courts also save tax dollars. In South Carolina, it costs between $17,000 and $20,000 per year to lock up one inmate. A Drug Court participant, however, only costs approximately $5,600 and is paid for by fines collected in General Sessions and Magistrate Courts. The savings to taxpayers is thousands of dollars per year. |
